In the world of occupational safety, "bright" doesn't always mean "compliant." Walk into any warehouse or construction site, and you’ll see a sea of neon yellow and orange. However, there is a massive regulatory distinction between a garment that provides enhanced visibility and one that meets the ANSI/ISEA 107 standard for high-visibility safety apparel (HVSA).
Understanding these differences isn't just about terminology—it’s about ensuring workers are legally protected and physically visible in high-risk environments.
One of the most misunderstood categories in the ANSI standard is Class E. You will often see high-visibility pants, bib overalls, or shorts labeled as "Supplemental Class E."
By themselves, Class E garments do not meet the requirements for high-visibility safety apparel. They are designed to be part of an ensemble.
Note: Wearing only Class E pants with a standard non-reflective t-shirt does not satisfy OSHA requirements for work near traffic.
Enhanced Visibility clothing is a broad category for garments that feature retroreflective tape or fluorescent colors but do not meet the strict material dimensions or brightness coefficients required by ANSI/ISEA 107.
These items are often used for internal corporate branding or low-risk environments. Common examples include:
When is Enhanced Visibility Appropriate?
Non-ANSI gear is suitable only for environments with:
It is vital to recognize that non-compliant gear is not a substitute for ANSI-rated clothing where safety regulations apply.
Organizations like OSHA and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) mandate specific performance classes based on the risk level of the work zone. Using an "enhanced visibility" shirt where a Class 2 vest is required can lead to:
| Feature | ANSI/ISEA 107 (Class 2/3) | Non ANSI / Enhanced Visibility |
|
Reflective Material |
Specific width and placement required |
Varies; often used for aesthetics |
|
Background Fabric |
Must meet high-fluorescence standards |
Any bright color; no lab testing required
|
|
Legal Status |
Required for roadway/high-risk work |
Recommended for low-risk/internal use |
|
Primary Goal |
Life safety and accident prevention |
Identification and corporate branding |
While enhanced visibility clothing serves a purpose in branding and internal organization, it cannot replace the rigorous engineering of ANSI-rated gear. Before selecting your next round of corporate apparel, evaluate the environment. If your team is working near moving vehicles or in high-traffic zones, ANSI/ISEA 107 compliance is non-negotiable.
